Terry's Travel Blog

About this blog

Instead of my usual trip overseas this year, I have decided to tour this great country of ours. Initially,  my thought was to rent a RV and go from state to state in one big trip, but chances are good that I would become bored very quickly, and then I would abandon the RV somewhere in Idaho and fly home. So I have decided that my sanity would be best served by breaking the journey into small trips that I can accomplish over long weekends or holidays. The goal is to visit all 50 states in one calendar year. Why choose the state capitols? “Why not?” The genesis of this idea came after a conversation I had with a lady who told me that visiting all 50 state capitols was on her “bucket list”. I thought to myself “Wow. That is really stupid.”

Flash forward a couple of months to the summer of 2009. I was sitting at work on a Friday with nothing to do. Boredom is a very dangerous state for my brain. Thoughts popped into my head. “I want to do a road trip this weekend.” “Oklahoma City is not very far away.” Thoughts began to multiply. Google Maps was referenced. Soon, I was on the road heading north. I left Dallas at around 2pm on Friday. I arrived back in Dallas at 10 pm Sunday evening having driven 2,000 miles, and visited capitols in six states. My expectations were low going in, but after seeing so many interesting places and meeting so many interesting people, I was hooked.

So, in the year 2010, my plan is to visit every state capitol. Over all, it is going to take probably 10 trips. I am really looking forward to this travel experience and this blog will give me an opportunity to share it with those that want to tag along “virtually”. Enjoy the ride.
